Welcome to Creatively Coping!

Written By: Matthew Tegge ©

Everybody starts somewhere. For me, it’s here.

This blog is a baby step—a messy, imperfect start toward something bigger and better. A more fulfilling career. A more fulfilled life. The focus of this blog is going to be creativity and mental health, and how we think outside the box to survive.

As a creative with ADHD, I know firsthand how hard it can be to try and fit into the "box." Yes, ADHD can be a challenge—it steals time, breaks focus, and makes us forget the little things. But here's the flip side: it’s also the fuel for our creativity. It allows us to hyperfocus when others are distracted, to make connections others miss, and to come up with solutions that no one else can see.

When we’re told something can’t be done, we find a way to do it. Not only do we do it—we do it right. When managed correctly it can supplement every aspect of our creative lives. When you have ADHD, you don’t think like other people. You make connections that most wouldn’t have made, and you can pull complex ideas seemingly from the ether. Hyperfocus can supplement our ability to build a story or even a world from scratch. It helps us flesh out the nitty gritty of our ideas because we get hooked on it, and we can’t help but think about it. ADHD in creative professions can be highly advantageous. While others are stuck on an idea, we’ve already brainstormed fifteen new ways to tackle the problem before our turn to speak even comes up.

It’s fantastic.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 35—pretty late in life, but better late than never, right? And I’m just beginning to understand how to work with it, not against it. This blog will be a space to share the real journey—the struggles, the successes, and the moments of complete creative chaos that come with living (and thriving) with ADHD, and many other mental health challenges.

This is my digital home base, and I’m thrilled to have you here. I hope you find the stories, the lessons, and the mishaps along the way entertaining and, maybe even inspiring.

So, stick around for the ride, bumps and all. If you’re anything like me you’ll enjoy a bit of chaos.

I'd love to hear from you! Drop a comment, share your experiences with ADHD and creativity, or suggest topics you’d enjoy in future posts. Let’s make this a space for creative minds to connect and thrive! Also, don’t forget to check out my longer form creative work on the 'My Works' page and hit me with some feedback and critique if you have the time!
